Abstract

Brendan Haley’s “From Staples Trap to Carbon Trap: Canada’s Peculiar Form of Carbon Lock-in” takes up the issue of the economic dominance of fossil fuel production in Canada through the perspective of the staples approach. He argues that Canada is caught in a “carbon trap” that has parallels to the concept of the “staples trap” developed by Harold Innis. Haley concludes with a critique of neoclassical environmental policies and thoughts on economic and political alternatives.
