Gene Production: A Political Economy of Human Genome Research

Abstract


Following on the heels of this century's two large-scale scientific endeavours, particle physics and the space programme, there is a new contender in the domain of "big
science:" genome research.' Regularly characterized as the pinnacle of an ongoing biological and technological "revolution," this research is anchored by the Human Genome Project (HGP) - set up to locate, map and sequence the full complement of human genetic material by 2005.
